Norton Commando
06/02/09 10:43 AM

Hub reminded me of some good memories of my '69 750 Commando. That was a hell of a bike. It was supposed to be the fastest production bike at the time. Back then it was all about English bikes. Wrenching was as necessary to riding as gas and oil. Tricks like wiring wiring exhaust lugs to not loosten were valuable. The Norton was the first to come out with rubber motor mounts to reduce vibration,,,,but still, numb fingers were par for the course. I once has a backfire and it bent the push rod and smashed the lifter face. I was able to get another lifter but it was 8 weeks back order on the push rod. An old mechanic down at the shop said why don't you just straighten it? So I hit it with a hammer until it looked straight. I put the engine back together. If both sets of valves were 180 from TDC you could slipthe head on and off without removing the motor. Well it ran great after that and some new plugs. Those were the days when you always wore your most comfortable boots for riding.....in case you had to walk home.

Yes indeed! Mine was metallic red and I had a matching helmet. Although helmets were not required then, I did wear it on the freeway.

Yellow Tank and side covers. This was the puppy. I have that era now is the BSA Hornet with the upsweep pipes. I had to bend special tools with a torch. I could bust down the Norton top ends all day long once I became a mechanic at a Tri/Nor dealership.

I was so green at the time, I had some kid a few years younger set the valves up, since they were a riding family and the old man could build a boat from scratch [we fished on], he was that kind of guy. So, yeah, looking back, I think I still have the tools someplace and the memories come and go on that bike.

At the time, they were pretty quick and I tell ya, the best handling bike I sat on, lifted my feet off of, was a real Norton feather-bed frame. It was for sale on consignment at a dealership I worked at in the early days. I mean, it felt so balanced, I would pick my feet up and just hang there, it was like imagining, is this what racing was all about?

I'll show you a set of pipes I had made for some Tri I was racing. Same upsweep thinking was that Norton look for some ground clearance running. Give me awhile. Check this out if you think stunts were something new.

Racing bug never left IS trophy websites now, Sharkey/spark key spark UP the place IS I goes a LAP Ping.

Get this running you can ride it says a college bud. I did and never looked back. Yes, bg, the hills of Steamboat Springs is that college parking lot I would ice drift it and go round-de-round on snow/ice. The crazy daze are not over...

Geared for stunts

Thanks hamr,

I smoked that rear tire for some shift shots, ruined the look with the smoke. I am ready for another run with a bald center tire. Crazy some bich is I don't think I have yet to stop living on that ragged edge.

The other morning, I unloaded a handful of cable because I saw something come the other way. Bye the time that CHP on a silent run slowing to wherever he was going, is thinkit on that BMW, I passed him on the other side doing about the speed limit. He was looking over at me... Never hit the brakes, I timed that boy inn.

Even before the sun comes up, I can't get a run in. Izzzzzz Crazysumtimes is live that ragged edge is not let UP!

Tonight is going to be hairy scary! Gonna change the test around and I need a water hole to keep the tire cool.
