ECU replacement
01/17/23 9:53 PM

Hi guys, 2013 Zx14R in Australia.

Couple months ago i was in a light crash where I've hit the car in front in me. Hit it slow, but broke all the plastics - didn't drop the bike.

I'm pretty sure the bike turned off on collision, and I've been unable to turn it on since. Key lights up screen, fuel pump does not trigger, ignition does nothing. Nothing indicating anything is wrong.

I took it to a repair place who have had it for a couple months. They insist they have tried everything they can think of - all sensors are fine, no errors reported, no damage, power seems fine. Tried using sensors from other 14R's, new battery, spare key.. other. They can't figure out what is wrong with it, just know it's immobilised. The only other thing they can think of is the ECU.

I've got a mate with a 2018 model. If i were to plug his ECU in and use his key, would this work? Or at least work so as to determine if the ECU is at fault?

Anyone else have any idea what might be happening? Can't find any physical damage other than breaking the nose fairing.

Are both bikes ABS? Are both bikes 02 compliant? You'd have to swap key sets. Better if you light his bike off with your key switch, and ECU. I'd see if you can see 12v to the fuel pump wires when you turn the key on.

Check fuses? Have you tried resetting immobilizer for your bike? No codes, no sensors failed.

Both are ABS. Not familiar with 02 compliance.

Haven't done much myself, as other than the fuel pump sound being cut short i couldn't identify anything different with the bike. Checked all fuses. Repair guy says no faults are displaying, all sensors seem to be working and all wiring and power seem to be fine. I'm going to get the bike back from them for now.

How would i reset the immobilizer on the bike?

Thanks for the reply.

I'd bought a 2012 that had been dropped and was a no start. There's a tip over switch that cuts the engine when it goes over on its side to prevent the engine from running with no oil in the sump. It's mounted up near the cluster and must be mounted with the wire connector facing down. You said the bike didn't go down but if the sensor mount which is plastic broke off it will shut off. It's a small black sensor with a 3 wire connector, I can get you more information if you need. To the best of my knowledge 2012-2015 ecu's can be interchanged, the only difference in the USA is with or without California emissions. The instrument cluster is different with or without ABS. Hope this helps, Rick B...

I noticed that part and it did seem the most likely suspect to me, as i damaged the plastic clip attached to it.

I'll get the bike back and play around with it more.. i wouldn't be shocked if I've put it back on upside down, though i thought i might have played with it.

Been without it for a couple months now - depression kicking in.

Ford brings up a good point about the tip over sensor. About the immobilizer, that would be a dealer special tool to recalibrate a key switch assembly change out. A crash or a flop over would not immobilize it. More like the tip over being 180° out and hanging upside down would kill the ignition for sure.

A month at a dealer shows they haven't a clue what is going on. Next is neglect of the bike sitting for a month without it being charged. Sort of like a misfeasance act of the bike in possession of their care.

First thought was tip over sensor, until "all sensors working OK".

I wonder if testing the tip over sensor could test OK even if it's say, stuck in tipped over mode.

I haven't done much myself because, aside from the fuel pump sound being cut short, I couldn't find anything wrong with the bike. I checked all of the fuses. According to the repairman, no faults are displayed, all sensors appear to be operational, and all wiring and power appear to be in working order. For the time being, I'm going to get the bike back from them.
