Triple Tree Removal
02/10/17 9:50 AM

So I lost my one and only key for my ZX14. Called dealer and they said I need to bring in motorcycle for lock smith to take a look at it. I have decided to remove the top of the triple tree and bring that in since the ignition switch is attached to it. I can't seem to find how to remove it though. Can anyone help me out? It seems I need to remove handle bars, and the steering seem head nut. Also should I would about the forks?

Thank you in advance.

Also looking at the ZX14. I see the 4 allen screws holding in the handle bars. 1 allen screw on the clutch side holding the top tree to the left fork, and also another one on the brake side holding it to the right fork. Then the steering steam head nut. It seems to easy. Worried I might mess something up.

1. The top center nut is broken first for the top crown.
2, The handlebar allen bolts; loosen and remove those, then simply lift the bars off the fork ends.
3. Loosen the top crown pinch bolts and remove the top nut if not alrighty then.
4. Follow the key's harness to the main harness and disconnect from there.
5. I'm going to guess the key lock has a dowel pin setup. Say they bored a hole in the frame so the dowel inserts into this. Say you cannot lift the top crown straight up off the forks.
6. Remove the front wheel. Drop the left fork at the lower pinch bolts.
7. Swivel out the upper crown and lift it off the right fork.
8. "Gorilla Option:" Keep the wheel on. At the left fork, loosen the pinch bolts at the lower crown and force the leg down so the upper crown can swivel out of the top crown.

I have never removed the top triple tree but I have removed forks.

The handlebars clipons are very easy to remove just by taking out the two allen head screws for each handlebar clipon. Then the clipon will turn loose on the fork top. You can pull it right up off of the fork top. Have something to tie it in place because you will have your fluid reservoirs you probably should keep upright and keep air from rising into the master cylinders or fluid leaks running down the bike.

After that, according to the service manual for the Gen1, remove the steering head nut and washer.

Then loosen the fork clam bolts on the top triple tree. It should come off but now you will have some ignition wiring to deal with and that, I have no clue about. Follow it and look for a connector....otherwise (and I suggest you be absolutely certain if you do it) you'll have to snip the wires and solder them back. I did that on my horn only to find the wires actually have spade connectors.

The fork clamp on the top triple tree is not the primary clamp. The main clamps are down below and they will hold the forks in place even if the top clamp is loosened. If you have Ohlins forks, those bottom clamp screws are only supposed to be torqued to ~7.5 ft lbs or something like that but there are 4 of them. They should hold the front up safely but maybe not if you put a lot of pressure on the front. If you have stock forks, you should be ok. Might want to try the torque on that bottom clamp first to be sure. If you really want to be totally safe, use a steering stem lift and rear stand.

Thanks gentlemen. Going to attempt it later today after I pick up the blank keys. Im hoping the bike won't fall at all. The steering is locked as well.
