The consensus seems to be that if you are over 35 you no longer want performance; just to cruise along on a "loud and heavy log" of a bike

Not true for some of us.

Its easy to feel outta place when you ride with guys 20 years or more younger than you are. That's why this site feels like a haven to many of us odd balls

I'm now 42. Bought my '12 as a turning 40, midlife whatever, birthday present to myself.

I would say almost for certain the average age is 40's. I hardly ever see other people on 14's around here on the street (Ann Arbor, MI); and when I do its at the drag strip. Those guys are usually 30's to 40's. Most of the guys I ride with -my age, or slightly younger are mostly on 1Kcc bikes. a couple gsxr's, couple R1's, a zx10, Ducati 1098s, and a couple FZ1's.

As for getting older, and switching to a cruiser, Harley, or whatever; I just have no desire to own one of those. In another ten, fifteen years I might switch to a C14 or a bike similar to that. or maybe not.

If I get to a point where I have to have something more comfortable, I love the idea of having a big motor naked bike too. Right now, if I had to pick one it might be the BMW S1000r. I am dying to ride something with active suspension like that. Seeing as I'll never ride the all mighty HP4. I like the Tuono v4r also.

In the short term future, I might end up with a second bike for longer rides anyway; but will likely be a first gen FZ1. They can be had cheap enough.

But a Harley? probably never. If they made something with enough go, and the price was right; I could maybe change my tune. Don't see that happening. factory supercharged vrod? I'd buy a Ducati Diavel instead.

At 49 I'm still in my 40s, but barely! My new bike comes home tomorrow!!

Rod I was contemplating a Diavel as I love the revisions for the latest model. But its too much to give for a bike as far as I'm concerned ($17,995). And I can't see parting with either my big ninja or s1000rr

I am also "not feeling" the upright cruiser riding podition either. Guess I am not hard wired to be a cruiser guy

Although if I were to ever change my mind, it's be for a New Diavel. Amazingly powerful looking brute of a bike that beast is

I'm 63 years old and feel every year. I've owned 13 street motorcycles, have 3 in the garage right now, 2003 FZ1,
12ZX14R, and just picked up a new to me-2007 1250s Bandit. Dale Walker says that there is 30 HP in this motor waiting to be discovered and I'm looking for them.
My best friend died in 2012. He was 59. He found out that he had stage 4 throat cancer and died within a month. Before he died he told me he would have bought a new car if he knew he was going to die. So, with that motivation I jumped ahead of schedule (before retirement) and got me the BEST Kawasaki made to date. I love the reasonable seat height and 2-counter-balancers. I'm averaging 40.8 mpg and I ride at 90 mph. I've touched 150 one night-sweet.
I've set my Bike for Touring/sport. I've got my Senior Passport for all the National Parks and plan to visit as many as I can while I can still ride.

So sorry to hear about your friend sir. My uncle died a year ago from cancer too, and was going to buy him a new BMW because he always wanted one. He never got the chance because he was bed ridden fairly quickly after being diagnosed. He was 59.

One of the hard parts of life to me is figuring out how to live for today while also planning for the future, you know, in case ya do make it
