headlight adjustments
03/26/13 8:26 AM

So I put HID highs and lows on the 14 and they look amazing. Can't believe I didn't do this sooner. Unfortunately, they are out of adjustment in a bad way - the lows are too low and the highs are too high. Adjusting isn't hard, but they both move the same way which makes it impossible to get them both right.

Anyone have a solution for getting my lows up a bit while getting the highs down some?

Gonna sound like a stupid response....please don't take it wrong...but how do you know they're way out of adjustment? They are gonna be much brighter than your stockers.

Secondly...are you sure they are sitting correctly in the lamp fixture(s)?I had to clip(a mm or so) the longer tabs off of mine to get them to seat all the way into the housings evenly.

I may be the only one who had this problem..IDK...no one else here has ever said they had to 'modify' the tabs....but somehow..that longer tab wouldn't slide into the slot on the receptacle without nipping a tiny bit off.HIGH beam bulbs only.I put high beams in all the lamps. The low beam bulbs fit fine ...IDK.What's odd is they all look the same tabwise...I would think they all fit right in there no sweat...but they didn't.

Nah, those are good questions. I've found that around 100% of the times you don't start by checking the stupid stuff, that's exactly what the problem is.

The lows are right where the stockers were. The highs though now point up slightly, noticeable on my fence as close as 10' away.

I'm pretty sure they're in there correctly. It's pretty easy to get to, and I can clearly see that they are properly seated in the

You know the fitment does seem the same on both highs and lows... I wonder if I put the lows in the highs and vice verse if that would help lol. Though now that I've read about it, I am considering taking off the HIDs from high beams. I wonder if I can find non-HID bulbs that would match the color of the low HID installed...?

Well..it sounds like they're right where they need to be?You're gonna get a substantial increase in lumens now...probably didn't notice the difference in pattern with those stock ones in there. You have to compromise a bit with these HID's...they usually do take some readjusting if you intend on driving at night with your highs on.I had to...cages were flashing me all the time at first.I decided I'd had enough of that...so I lowered the assemblies down a shade, and tweaked em to the right(sitting on the bike)just a bit. That got the beam out of the direct path of the oncoming cars...enough where they could see okay.Plus I also rode with em in High beam at night and switched to lows with any approaching car...so they knew that was the lowest possible...the flashing went away;)People aren't used to 'brighter' bulbs at night. They can appear like High beams to the average driver.

The problem with the HID's is the light units are not made for them. The light source in a HID bulb is in a different position relative to the reflector and lens than in a filament bulb. They may look 'cool' in some people's opinion but at best you're going to dazzle other road users and p*ss them off. At worst you're going to dazzle someone and potentially cause an accident. If you can't get the beams focused correctly then I'd recommend you take them out but it's your call. PIAA make some filament bulbs with almost the same colour temp as HID's. There's a thread on here about them somewhere. JMO

You can get those adjusted for other driver's vision...just takes some time to get out there and check out where the beams are pointing...then stopping where you can adjust em(like against a supermarket wall)and take it from there. That's how I did mine...took a few times to get em positioned right...but in the end, they turned out excellent, and I didn't have anyone flashing me at all.

I had a way of doing it...by standing in front of the bike at about 8 feet out, then stepping to the right(my right)about a foot or so.Then I adjusted the lamps to be hitting me directly at that position while simulating the height of the oncoming cars driver area. This worked very well for me.I rode...and got a flash a time or two...that told me they were too far into the driver's faces. So I readjusted a bit more off center...that worked fine.Because of the lumens...they were very nicely bright even being positioned as they were...you really couldn't tell they were not pointing straight...unless you were oncoming..then they just appeared illuminated...but not blinding.

CORRECTION....The adjustments were: standing in front of bike off the LEFT side about a foot, and about 8-10 feet out,and adjusting to hit me straight on at that position....that's what I meant.NOT off to the right side(which would be the 'oncoming' car's path).

That's actually very useful, because I realize now that I need to do something with the running lights. Thanks!
