Rad flush question
09/03/09 10:20 AM

Hi, Hub. I appreciate the info you contributed here.

My only question is after draining the old coolant and filling the system with distilled water to flush, should I run the motor for 60 seconds to circulate the flush water throughout the water jackets? Or is it fine to just fill it and flush it without ever turning on the motor?

Hi, Rook.

When you drain it, please consider disconnecting the rubber tubes on the right side (facing forward) of the radiator at the radiator end and getting the fluid out of them by lowering that end of the tubes. A LOT of fluid will remain in those tubes if you are just draining by opening the drain plug.

I don't believe this is mentioned in the service manual. -bg

Thanks bg. I remembered your suggestion removing hoses from the other thread. Thanks Hub. I'll try running the distilled water around in there a few minutes. I might do that with cap on and then let it cool off for a bit before draining. No sense in leaving a warm engine with no water in it, hey? I bet more than a couple minutes running and the engine heat will expand that water right out of the open neck if the cap is off. I think i did that back in high school in Mr. Villa's class. Mr Villa wasn't too happy with me.

I was switching between the stock coolant and Engine Ice, so I wanted to get ALL of the old stuff out of there. I went through 3 gallons of distilled water in drain-fill-run-drain cycles without removing the hoses, and I was still getting colored liquid out of it.

That told me that there was a lot of fluid stuck in there somewhere, and that's when I decided to unhook the hoses and drain them. I was surprised by how much came out of them... -bg

Gotcha, bg. Thanks. They'll be getting removed and flushed.
