SHORAI BATTERY LONGTERM REVIEW - LASTED 10 YEARS 25K MILES
06/14/21 4:26 PM

I installed my little Shorai LFXBS12-14A2 in April 04, 2011. Always kept on a Shorai maintainer during storage. I used a Battery Tender Jr for lead/acid batteries on it for a short time during the first storage. No idea if that had any adverse effect. I heard a lead acid maintainer could be used but that it would not balance the cells like a Shorai maintainer would so I had a Shorai maintainer on it within a month.

After about 4 years of use, I believe it no longer held a sufficient charge after sitting about a week. It sat for four months off a maintainer before I installed it so it held a charge extremely well when brand new. After 5 years, I distinctly remember it would not hold a charge for more than two days. Last season, I wouldn't let the bike sit more than overnight or it would be dead but after 24 hours, it still held 12+ volts. The motor did seem to turn over 4 or five times before it fired off. This season, The voltmeter will still read 12.1 when I turn the key on after 24 hours. but the motor needs about 8 turns before it will fire up. Last ride, it didn't start on the first try. Second try, eight turns, it lit off.

Today, 24 hours later, cooler weather we've been having, voltage read 11.2. I knew that wouldn't start it. It fired up twice one beat but died. I saw the voltage go to 8 and then back to 11. I guess it's dead. 10 years though!

My busa's original lead acid battery is 11 years old. I expect it might die on me this year.

So, should I keep the Shorai on a maintainer overnight and keep running it? Should I buy another Shorai or is there some better, lighter battery out there? I don't need ten years but I do need reliable for the street and I plan to run several Aftermarket analog gauges and a nitrus system.

Antigravity is about 20 bucks cheaper but has 180 CCA as opposed to 200. Both have 7 amps/hr which I found is a measurement of how much power the battery can charge/discharge. 7 looks like a pretty good number. battery discharges 7 amps for one hour before fully discharged, More Ah the better I'd assume. Full spectrum I hear is a great battery for racing but for a battery of comparable weight, it is a bit less expensive than Shorai but it has a lot less CCA and only 2.5Ah plus it's a tad heavier.

Amazon has Shorai LFX14A2-BS12 for $143 free shipping. I think I paid over $200 for the one I got 10 years ago.
