You figure a year or 36k [whichever comes first] so stock up on OE filters, run kawi oil. See if he can throw in a filter and 4 quarts, you're going to dump at 600 and 1,200 mile. The 600 dump is install the kawi syn oil. This way you are covered oil/filter maintenance wise, and write down the date and miles in the owner's manual. So that's at least 2 filters and 8qts gone with two dumps. Buy a 3rd filter and 4 more quarts or get comped for that round. So a minimum of 3 filters and 12 quarts of OE. That should get you started.

Thanks, I'm hoping they'll give me a military discount, probably pushing to ask for oil and filters, but hopefully the worst they can say is no!
I'll be very lucky to cover 3k in a year. Usually I only commute about 1500 miles by bike. I'm not planning to ride the 14 too much until I either sell the zx10 or pay off the zx14. Hopefully I'll make it to the drag strip a few times after some breakin/familiarization, but that won't put on many miles.

I've never heard any hard data on oil changes during break in. If you do a by-the-book break in, I'd do as Hub suggests. I'd be more inclined to wait til 3000 miles before I switch to synthetic. Don't know how much oil the 14r takes but the Gen1 takes 4 quarts, 10 oz including the filter. I'd suggest filling the filter halfway with oil (if you fill to the top vertically, half will pour out when you install horizontally) every time you change oil. That might help avoid this.

Great advice on prefilling the filter. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Still sore from my 250 mile ride. I love the new machine!

You rode! AWESOME. Your hamstrings will get used to it. Might take 6 months. Iwas 44 and I got over it. It's as comfy as can be expected now. Not like a car but no bikes are.

The zx14 is just wider than what I'm used to. I ride almost every day.
The oil change was a pita. Had a heck of a time getting the filter off.

Must have been overtightened? It sure isn't hard to reach. My factory filter was overtightened. I used two strap wrenches to remove it and it was crushed like beer can.

Yeah factory filter must be over tightened or something. IME the filters always nest a little, even tightening to 13 ft lbs when removing it's a touch more difficult than I'm used to.

It was definitely over tightened. Looked like a crushed tin can by the time we were done with it.

Just til it touches and then 1/2 turn or a bit more. Never had one leak or come loose in 44k miles.

13 ft lbs is perfect. From the factory either due to shipping/sitting times it either bonds with engine housing or it's over tightened. Pretty typical to read what you're saying, had to destroy it to remove it.

13 ft lbs, you just need to use some tool, whether it's one of the end caps or strap wrench removing it is sitll tough but no problem.
