Horn Removal

Horn Removal
In most places, the horn is required for street legal operation of your motorcycle. For racing purposes it may be removed to reduce weight and also is ideal to activate a nitrous oxide system or other electronic mod.

Remove the upper inner fairing (see Fairing Removal, Upper Inner Fairing).

Note that the Steering Stem Cover had been previously removed (see see STEERING STEM COVER REMOVAL, steps 1 and 2).

Tools:
10mm socket
3 inch extension

Removal

1. Use a 10mm socket and 3 inch extension to remove the two bolts that hold the horn bracket to the underside of the fork bracket.

2. Mark the two contacts to their connection on the horn for easy installation. The spade connectors may seem to be permanently attached to the horn but that is only because they have a detent that locks them. slide the connectors apart as far as possible and then insert a sharp, angled object (I used the bent point of a steak knife) into the hole in the male contact to pry outward and lift the detent in the female contact. Pull the spade connectors apart and remove the horn.

3. Use electrical tape to insulate the contacts on the horn wire so that they do not accidentally touch. Coil the wire up and fasten it to the ram air tube with a ziptie.

Installation
4. Installation of the horn is the reverse procedure.

1. Horn Lead
2. Run the right switch housing, horn, headlight and *front wheel rotation sensor leads through the clamp.
3. Do not run the horn lead through the clamp on the steering stem.

The Service Manual contains the illustration shown above which shows proper routing of the horn lead.

Install the steering stem cover (STEERING STEM COVER, step 3)

Removing the horn results in a weight loss of 9.20 oz.
