Pre B-Day present
10/02/10 2:59 PM

Last night, weather was sweet.65 degrees out.2:00 am....took a nice little 80 mile ride to one of my little relax spots.Well, along the way...there's a stretch of road, winding, but open.Marked 55.No one behind me,no one approaching.Okay, eased er up to well...apparently 91.Then I see it.FLASHING LIGHTS behind me.OOOPPS.Geez.A perfect ride and season without a ticket...now dashed to pieces.

Okay,stop my baby.Get off,remove helmet.Sheriff comes up...ya..."you're brave aren't you?"he asks."What?" I says.

"yer brave aren't you...you know how fast you were going there?"

"Well sir,no,actually I didn't"(which was the truth)(I wasn't watching my speedo.I was watching for deer)."what do you mean by brave?I'm not"

"you know if you hit a deer at those speeds,it's gonna be a serious mess for you"....Okay....now what...so I says" well sir,I've not ever had any deer run out in front of me...honestly,I don't worry much about it...they all seem to just stay where they are when I see em"....lame....but true.

"Do you have your license?".....uhm...uh oh.

"No sir,I don't.I need to get a replacement.Sorry"
"Okay,name...birthdate,what kind of bike is that?...and what year?"
"Where you headed?"

"I'm just goin on up to Rollins up here,it's my little "getaway spot" kinda".He nods..."okay,just a minute"
So I give him all that.Strange thing was...I wasn't even concerned that I was about to get a serious ticket.I tried to feel "bad",standing there. But for some reason,I just couldn't.

Within about 3 minutes...enough time for me to light up a cigar...he comes walkin back...here we go.

"I'm not gonna give you a ticket".WTF I'm thinkin.But glad,yes.

"Well, thank you sir. That's really nice of ya.I promise,I'll slow down"..."have you ever ridden one of these?"I asked.

"yeah,I have.100 mph in second gear...I know how easy that is"

"You should ride one of THESE"...I say."she's so smooth that it's way easy to break the limit without even realizing it"...I could have left that observation OUT of the conversation.Dumb.

"ya,I know" he says.

"I'll slow up...sorry about that...thanks again"

"Okay,take it easy"

And just like that...it was all over and he was pulling a u-turn outta there.I had a strange feeling as I watched him drive away....kinda like..."This just doesn't happen to YOU Monty"

Now THAT'S a first...and virtually UNHEARD OF.91 in a 55...that's a SWEET FAT FINE.

I kept my promise to him and drove the speed limit the rest of my ride.

I truly have no idea...well...I have an idea,but....I'll leave it at that.Personally....I'm in the minority when it comes to being set free with no ticket.I've definitely had my share since owning my baby.

Which brings to mind....I hadn't thought about it really,but...just how DID he clock me doing 91?I'm quite observant about who's coming up behind(ESPECIALLY at NIGHT),do head checks pretty often. That run of road....it weren't no city block.I'm pretty sure I'd have noticed headlights on my 6:00 for the length of road "we" were driving to get a speed read.Uhhmmmmm.Interesting.I KNOW the incident was real...cause the guy in front of me pulled over as soon as I got lit up.Come to think of it...I hadn't even noticed that guy ahead UNTIL he DID pull over.WTH?And another thing....when I got off my bike...the Sheriff car was right behind me stopped with his lights flashing.....but there wasn't any "guy" pulled over behind him?(okay,on retrospect,he COULD have pulled away and been gone once he realized it was me being stopped)So that's not anything odd.

Be Be Be Be Be Be Be Be....yer next stop...the twilight zone God knows how many deer I missed last night by being stopped for that 5-8 minutes. Gotta say though, that's the quickest traffic stop I've ever had.And he wasn't in any hurry to get outta there either when he drove off.

Yeah...I hear ya alright.I never sass a cop.Hell...I know their job is dangerous.Lots of armed people out there that HATE LEO's.Not me.Yer absolutely right about "sitting" unseen. The speed limit's the speed limit...regardless of whether an officer is around or not.Strange thing though.I'm VERY tuned in to what's around me as I ride. With my HIDs blarin I didn't see ANY white Sheriff's car anywhere along the road that I might have passed.Several miles I might add.So I've NO idea where he came from,or why he'd be followin me...I was doin 45...the limit, just through the previous little town there, and it opens up to 55.There was no one behind me at all from the outset of the 45 till I got stopped on down the road in the "end" of the 55 zone, going into another 45 zone, which I was slowing for anyway. He had to be following without headlights. That's all I can think of.The only "burst" of speed was a pretty short length, maybe two curves...and that was it.I didn't see anyone in a car back there before that.He must not have had radar...cause I think(it's been the case for me anyway)that once they activate it,it's recorded...so they can't just "throw the speed sheet away".Ya...it was a nice Birthday gift to me anyway!

I've really no idea why he let me off. It's an amazing story that's for sure.Gotta remember though...this wasn't like I was blasting through town.Only two curves, then I was slowing for the "city" speed limit of 45(coming up).I'm pretty sure he wasn't using radar.

I seriously doubt I'll get a break like that again....which means..."Casey Jones better watch yo speed".
