yeah sounds like you didn't have tension on the correct side of the chain..

I have run the engine with the set up as is for over 200 miles, but the 30 pin thing came back to haunt me so I've pulled the cover of to check, it did seem a bit lumpy under 2500rpm, do you think this could be due to the position of the ext. cam shaft being a tooth out? when I look at it, a tooth may take the mark under the top of the head. just wish to hell I had looked at it before I took it to bits.

It might result in valve hitting piston, been there, done that

don't think that has happened edge, as I see it, the number of links going over the two sprocket can't change when the chain is taught, tomorrow I will take the cam shaft out and have another go at them but if anyone can come up with an alternative I'm all ears. thanks

OK guys, this duck egg has now sorted my little problem of my own making, I hate to have to tell you all about it but here goes. I stripped the top end off over the winter, and it stood quite a time while I waited for bit to turn up, for some reason I turned the crank one revolution and there lay my problem, today took the cam shafts out, one revolution and hay presto all lined up, sweet as a nut again, once again thank you all for your input, and maybe this will help a numb nuts like me from making the same cock up.

don't be so hard on yourself.
I have been known to have the valve covers off my bike for a week or two at a time because I just lock up. When I'm dealing with the one thing that keeps everything from hitting everything else, you're damn right, I get nervous!
Just glad it turned out to be nothing , which is really how most things end up, especially electrical problems - nothing more than operator error. So you're no different than any of us. Just a matter of knowing what things to eliminate really, and that brings us here!
