How adjust throttle grip free play on Gen 2??
06/09/19 11:09 AM

I've searched the forum using variants of "throttle grip free play" and found nothing. On a Gen TWO ZX-14R, how do you adjust the throttle grip free play??

On most (all?) other bikes, you do so via the 2 threaded adjusters right beside the throttle grip. But on my 2017 ZX-14R, there are no adjusters there when you peel back the rubber cover!

Where are the adjusters?

Where are the adjusters?

Follow the throttle cable. Cable adjusters are about 10" down the cable from
the throttle.

Run cable adjusters in so you hide the screw threads inside the cable adjuster. The forward or front cable is the pull side. Leave this adjuster alone for now. Rear cable on the throttle housing is the safety return cable. Adjust this cable first. Run the adjuster out so you take up the return slack. Leave an ever so slight inner cable play so that you do not bow-string the inner cable so tight, you may not obtain full WOT opening. Take up the throttle tube slack by running out the front cable to the point of zero movement at the grip, if not an ever so slight freeplay at the grip. Finalize by starting the bike up, then turn the bars from lock to lock to see if the cable forces the throttle plate to open and raise idle. Turn in the front cable some to return to more slack, test bar-to-bar-lock so the idle does not move. Tighten the locking thumbwheel(s) by hand only.

Thanks, Pike and Hub! The slack has been driving me nuts (3/16").

Check out my Throtle Cable Removal tutorial. Most be the same for Gen2 as Gen1. Yes that little freeplay zone was a PITA.

I just made the adjustment! It was much easier than I expected, and BETTER than the "old" adjusters which required using 2 wrenches - No tools required on this more modern, plastic version! A good thing too, as there is SO little space around the adjusters!

From past experience, I know the amount of throttle grip play makes all the difference in smoothness when shifting gears! So, looking forward to trying it out tomorrow or Tuesday.

Thanks for the help, Guys. :)

Yes! Now that the throttle slack is like it should be, BIG improvement! Thanks again for the help, Guys.
