Cool! Now...
Engine still have the same knock sound? Tear that filter open in about 250 miles of that rebuild and inspect pleats.

you guys are way over my head but my 07 has been knocking down low lt side (only when cold) since 500 miles. has about 3500 now.
i bought the 5 year warranty but i'm not sure if i trust the tech (or any local tech). i'm starting to hate this bike.

Dave, is it a knock or is it a rattle.

They all rattle until the cam chain gets oiled up. Mine usually takes a few seconds. It usually lasts longer after parked on an incline facing up hill. I would take it in and just ask' "what is this noise?" If they say CCT, don't worry about it.

i hear the chain rattle, lasts just a second or two. no worries there. this is a knock that lasts until the bike gets up to normal operating temp. it's not there(can't hear it) til it comes off fast idle. i took it to the dealer last year and he heard it too, the next day after it cooled down. kawasaki said "normal, just ride it". i think i'll take it back in the spring but it pisses me off.
i expressed concern when i bought it new, i heard on this list of knocking issues. of course it didn't do it until about 500 miles. it's an 07. thanks for the input

Hub, no knock as of yet. But when she was new the knock didn't show up until around 500 miles.I plan on changing the oil around 300 and cutting the filter open to check it.

Dave, the knock my bike had showed up around 500 miles. It was a very different knock than the CCT. It was non existant at idle or under load. When riding, when coming of the throttle and slowing to a stop you could hear the knock. At idle if you eased on the throttle you could hear the knock up until around 4k then it dissappeared. The same thing Kawi said it was normal on the 06' 07'. Just keep a close eye on it, if it gets any worse take it in and refuse anything short of a tear down.

Thanks, Heathun. DMC, you need to pull the oil filter [NOW], open the thing up, check for copper/brass colored chips along with aluminum debris with it. If that knock is winding up like Heathun's bottom end, you can point that evidence to your dealer. Swap that one bearing insert set is my guess you see a lot of shavings in the filter pleats.

A Heathun knock is not normal @500miles. My memory is questionable. But, I remember my '06 lit up one day @2K on the speedo, made this unique low rpm knocking bellow noise. I thought it may have been the pistons having more carbon buildup with more miles on it, being the factory changed the profile of the pistons to run quieter on the second gen bike. And I have yet to hear that same noise on my second gen.

I'm trying to remember how much material I saw in the '06, that if mem serves, I remember seeing brass chips, some aluminum, kind of mem. I beat that 14 hard as I do the one I have now. Call me, Mr. Consistency. The first 14 engine family was a new unknown. I more or less wanted to break it, not break it in.

I cannot tell you how smooth a ride you can get this bike to run at and it's so much fun to boot! Ain't nothing I can step down to, so you wanna unload that bike of yours, DMC, I'm confident enough to buy another 14 no matter the year or noise.

I'm with Hub. Shit happens, There was an 09' R-1 motor torn down when I was at the shop. It was bad a rod let go at 13k and threw shit through the motor.

I'll keep my 07 and put a couple more years on it. Hell it's practically a new motor in it now.

I've ridden Kawis my whole life and ridden them hard, this is the first one I've ever had any kind of internal issue with so I can't complain too much.

heathun, Good to see you have a sense of humor, and an outlook on life to match. Hope you get a good run out of this little bearing shell, its amazing the job they do on just a film of oil. While were on about oil what was the oil of choice before and after the rebuild ? .If you don't mind me asking.

Glad yer up an runnin again Heathun!Hope my bike never breaks-what a bummer that must have been.Havin a blast and the next thing-Boom!.I am also curious-what brand and type of oil?Several bikes now have had this issue-lubrication problems-and subsequent breakage.Yet no one is mentioning oil brand or type. With all the oil posts and guys using these different oils other than Kawasaki(not that you need to use that one)-it would be maybe interesting to see if there could be some common thread going along these things.Ride safe Bro-glad as I said yer up and at em again!Rock On!

thanks heathun, Mobil make good gear, like you said you didn't think it looked like an oil prob . maybe a combination of factors. Thanks for the pics and info, sad you had to spend the dollars but at least you know what you got now.
