PAINTING ZX14
09/10/17 11:55 PM

Thinking about paint the beast!! This would be my first time painting a motorcycle. So are there any tricks to painting the plastic fairings? And also where can I get the decals? I noticed the "Kawasaki" on the tank looks like its in the paint. Was thinking about putting the "Kawasaki" logo from the 14R's. It pops out more
Thanks in advanced

You can get a very nice mirror like finish with rattle cans on the small fairings of a motorcycle. I've done my sprocket to perfection. I have also experimented with clearcoat on fairings. Definitely sand with light grit paper first. Then the trick is to spray it wet and polish it with a low abrasive like 3M scratch and swirl remover to level off to a perfectly smooth surface. If the paint is really slow to harden, you might need to use your fingers to polish instead of a microfiber cloth.

I would not pay for factory copies if you can find a color you like in a Duplicolor or some other brand. Paint's paint. Unless you subject your bike to harsh conditions, I do not think you will benefit fro an expensive rattle can paint.

Paints that have catalyzer will harden to max very quickly so they are worth the extra $$ but you usually only get that for sprayer application. Eastwood makes some catalyzed paints in rattle cans.

Good luck. Try a damaged fairing or belly pan first--no sanding. If you screw up, non catalyzed paint will wash right off with solvent---and that is the problem with non catalyzed paint, not the fact that it was applied with the low pressure of a rattlecan.

You can buy OEM decals from Partzilla or any supplier of OEM parts but you will crap when you see the cost. I have seen emblems on Ebay and the KAWASAKI logo for the tank. As for the tank, yes the stickers are under the clearcoat. You might have luck sanding down to level and then paint over. I'd just go with a vinyl logo on top of the clear coat when it is very, VERY thoroughly hardened--like in a year if you don't have catalized clearcoat. Definitely do the tank last. You don't want to experimemt with that.

I've used Color-Rite to do individual panels and touch up, but the single-stage urethane I've been using on the old bike projects is what I would use to paint an entire set of body panels and tank.. It requires a proper compressor and spray gun but done correctly makes for a hard, shiny gas-proof finish. As will all painting, prep is 90% of the work and definitely the most important. The Color-Rite rattle cans work OK and their clear is harder than Chinese arithmetic, but you have to do the same prep work regardless of what's used to paint. If your compressor doesn't have one, you would need to add an inline water filter and dryer and keep the dryer filled with fresh purple absorbent beads (they turn pink when saturated). I just picked up a decent cheap gravity-feed HVLP spray gun for $70 at Northern Tool.
