Vibration
05/18/09 7:19 PM

I am getting a vibration in my handle bars to the point that if I let go of one bar you can see it shaking. I called the dealer and they said it could be a bad tire or the steering stem bearings need tightened. Has anyone else had this issue? The vibrations seem to be between 30-40 mph and 50-60 mph

It doesn't vibrate when idling it is smooth. The vibration occurs when riding at about 30-40mph and about 50-60mph other then that its non existent. The bike only has 2800 miles and the oil has been changed 5 times.

Tire pressure was the first place I looked and it is spot on 42psi. I'm going to stop and get a 36mm socket to check to torque on the steering stem tomorrow after work. I do hear a kind of knock when pushing and grabbing the front brake is this fixed simply by tightening the steering stem nut or do the lock nuts need adjusted also?

Hey conneault-remember-42 psi COLD is NOT what you'll have when she warms up.Tire wear is gonna be more pronounced once she's warm.I changed my fronts at around 7500 to 8500 miles. The mild wiggling from the frontend stopped.(same symptoms as yours-exactly).Running Pirelli Stradas-very good mileage tire-rears last me about 5000 miles or maybe a little more(but I don't run the rears down to the cords either).16/42 gearing. So they will wear quicker than stock gearing if you ride more aggressively. With my stock gearing,I could pull around 6000 miles off a rear.

Well I stopped at the dealer and the mechanic checked the lock nuts and said they were good and torqued the center nut. He told me that as long as the pinch bolts are tight and the center isn't falling off the lock nuts usually aren't a problem. Any how the vibration is still there but seems slightly less and seems to be occurring between 3000 & 4000 rpm now and only when I let off the throttle. I read some where that that was the case when removing the flies. Is this true?

mine vibrates some too, but, I also heard that it is from the flies out. I've put 3,500 miles on it in the last month and a half and it isn't getting any worse so I'm not gonna worry about it.

I'm not sure we're on the same page here.Is it a VIBRATION in the bars,or a wiggle when you remove your hands?(even a slight wiggle).3-4,000 rpm could occur in any gear-and a wiggle at the bars would probably occur at a certain speed, not rpm.(yes?Just my experience with mine).Mine wiggled when decelerating(taking my hands off the bars)at around 40-50 mph.New tire fixed mine.If he checked your bearings on the steering head, then it's NOT that.I say Tire wear-that's my guess.Like Hub said-once it sets in,it's probably gonna continue until you replace yer tire.

I checked again and paid closer attention and you are correct Blue it does it if I let go of the bar on decel between 40-50 and stop as soon as it drops below 40.
thanks guys

here is what I found and fixed...

If your tire is new and you trust the tech that did the tire balancing..then its not a tire issue or
wheel weight issue..
Its how the wheel weights are mounted..

The best wheel weights are the ones that cramp onto the rim centerline..
But should they stick tape wheel weights on (which is typical), then make sure they or you place
the tape on wheel weights as centerline as can be.

On my bike I have a tire pressure monitor system inside my rim.
I typically have lots of wheel tape on weights cuz of it.
Once I divided up the amount of wheel weights and placed them on both sides of the center-ist place I could tape them
The front vibration did go away completely.

I also use DynaBeads in both front and rear tires..WHY..my tests reveeeeled that with them I get much more uniform tire
wear and no cupping in the front at all..
with out the dyna beads..I get cupping and less tire wear..

Mounted a new set of Diablo Stradas and the vibration is gone and the tires are 150% better than the stockers
