2013 ZX14R Need Help
11/15/23 8:31 AM

Bought the bike new out the crate in 2013 and its been problem free until now... Bike has approximately 13.5k on it stock motor with basic full brocks, block offs, Annitori QS, and ecu flash. Last summer I put in HD springs and new clutch and since then I have gone through 2 shift stars, first time I sheared off the 4th gear lobe and got stuck in 5-6 and just not I sheared off 5th so bike is not stuck in 1-4. Along with the tranny issues in the last year I have gone through 4 axle adjustment bolts on the drive side, bike is still running the stock chain but I have serviced it regularly and never had this issue with any of my other bikes.

Does anyone have any idea why I'm shearing off teeth on stock shift stars or any idea why the drive side bolts keep bending?

In my uneducated opinion, one thing you wrote set all my alarm bells ringing.

"Annitori QS"

And you have shifting and drive issues?
If it was me that would be my first port of call.

@ Yannih I went down that rabbit hole already and double checked the entire unit and wiring. Ive had it on since the bike had 39 miles on it. I highly doubt its the shifter. Im thinking about putting th stock springs back in once i get a new shift star in the spring. Does anyone out ther recommend I upgrade to the factory pro star over the stock oem one and if so what is your review?

I'm thinking the HD springs and low kill time are creating a shitty situation where unless im slamming into gear with force then it misses shift and free spins and then bangs into gear which is causing the teeth to shear. this never happened prior to the hd springs.

As far as the axle adjustment bolts, they aren't designed to hold the axle in place. Your axle has to be trying to move. I'm guessing it's not tight enough. Check that first.

My 2022 ZX14R is bending the bolt also on chain side I cut a aluminum block and put in when hit over 600 miles. I'm 250 riding wheelies. And yes I torqued the the axle bolt to spec. Bent 3 bolts. Maybe when buy new chain and sprockets I will order the titanium bolts ??

Stick with steel, steel is stronger than titanium overall it's just in the stronger pound for pound type comparison.

As far as why? I doubt since the trouble parts have been replaced at least once it's not likely the parts are defective. So I would just boil it down to riding habits and things seeming coupled to your situation. Don't recall either of those issues coming up before here but I'm sure it's happened to others and probably are other examples here that I don't know or remember.

I had an HM quickshifter on my Gen 1. I never sheared a pin off the shiftstar but I'm pretty sure I damaged my shift dogs with it. It was all due to using a kill time that was too fast for our transmission.

I had HD springs on my clutch. No problem just harder to pull the lever.

Factory Pro shift star is not any kind of improvement on a Gen1 ZX-14 and I doubt a Gen either. Same diameter as the factory shift star. The OEM shift star is pointy, Factory Pro is rounded. Rounded shouls ake shifting smoother but it doesn't. Switch to a factory Pro if you want but it weighs more and it doesn't do anything a OEM shift star doesn't do. Factory Pro might actually cause you to miss a shift more than an OEN shift star. The Factory Pro shift star looks better for the Hayabusa.

I put the Pingel Electric shifter on my 2022 ZX14R and love it for shifting up over 4000 rpm on the throttle only if off throttle will not shift . If letting off throttle I foot shift and I always down shift with foot. When on the throttle it always shift and and keep legs back wheeling through 1st and 2nd gear.

It's crazy maybe I'm to aggressive but 3 bolts bent in a post off the bolt bent. Maybe because off and on throttle when wheeling. The ZX14R is a torque monster and I use every bit off it.

wondering maybe if the rear swingarm pivot bolt is secure.something's flexing that shouldn't.?The adjuster bolts are not made to secure the axle.

Stick with the stock adjust bolts. I think the torque is overriding the pull up? Figure from center collar out, you over torque the axle more. Puts more bite into both sides of the swing arm legs so it holds more. Spin the tire with it torqued to spec, then tighten more by 5-10 pounds or more? Axle nut does not spin off says it moved the threads from this ||| to this ///. Replace both as a set. Spin the wheel and feel no change after the higher torque, this says no bind at the bearing cages.

Springs have nothing to do with a Q-shift assist. WOThe fuck is going on with the star wearing out an edge? Say your 13k against my mid 20k and have yet to pull the clutch lever in to shift, short of starting out, going for 2nd then coast to the last drop I find 1st and avoid the clunk. I'm using less star [pressure] under load, using less lever pulls to downshift every gear. So say 50/50 I ride thru the canyons, then the other streets and freeways.

Clanging out of gear and slamming home I can count on one hand.

Who needs a Q-shift when tearing toes off. Took my ankle for a ride and that did sting.
