Shift RPM?
09/27/20 8:46 PM

What rpm are you guys shifting at on the track? I just got my ecu flashed by schnitz and they bumped the limiter to 11,500 but I don’t feel like reving it that high will benefit me. My best time 9.87@140 and I’m 265 lbs suited

Mods are:
Brocks strap kit
Roaring toys lowering links
Stretched to 68”
Shinko hook up
Schnitz flash
Muzzy catless exhaust with no can (turn down after header)
Slight weight reduction

Just my opinion but the higher the shift point , the stronger your next gear will begin at.

That’s what I was thinking as well. It seems like a lot of guys are using 87 octane, I assume you need to be tuned for that?

I’m using premium right now but I’ve heard you power on 87 if you’re tuned for it

A couple of question for you is what are you currently using for gearing? What elevation is the track you run on? Is there any ethanol free fuel available in your area? What's your average 60ft. and what gear at what RPM are you currently trapping? How many miles are on the bike?

Fordtech58,

Current gearing is 16/45, it’s not optimum for my weight but when I drop some it’ll be better, the night I ran my two best passes the da was 4300, actual altitude is 2900ish. Yes there is ethanol free fuel. I’m still learning how to launch the bike, my 60’s are in the 1.68-1.75 range. Crossing the line in 5th gear not 100% sure on rpm but I’d guess about 9500-10,000, I shift to 5th just before I cross. Bike is a 2013 and has 4200 miles

Gearing is 17/42. I was shifting at 11000. Going thru the lites at 4th /11000 or barely into 5th . Home Track is 498 ft.
I run 9.50s with a best of 9.408, speed is generally 150.. with 17/41 ,I have ran 151.? cant remember.
Bike is 2013 with 22000 miles . SWB ,lowered, flashed and dyno tuned by local shop, Brocks Alienhead SS, Holeshot electric shifter. Running Brocks 89 map with an occassional very slight adjustment. I am normally 124 stripped but gaining a few pounds, about 128/129 now. Gear weighs 14 Pounds, 8 ounces.

When I was running my 2012 naturally aspirated I used 89 ethanol free fuel only. I'm 180 suited it was at 70"wb. Shinko with 17/47 gearing. Brocks pipe, map and clutch mod with a hand clutch launching 5500-6000. I'd shift in the 10,500 range which was 11,000 on the tach. I also had a Brock shock, ecu flash and after a full season my best was 8.78@160 with a 1.42-1.44 60ft. I've always tried to gear to trap near the top of 5th just below the limiter. On Maui we're at 90ft. elevation though our DA is usually 1600-2200ft. That bike had 6,000 miles. I raced a 2005 Busa on the mainland on 87 pump regular for 6 years with better times and mph than 89 or 93. Feel free to ask anything else if I can help. Aloha...

Chrly: you've certainly got quite a weight advantage on myself and 13zx14noob!

13zx14noob: I assume you've got an air shifter or are you foot shifting? Next time out you may just want to try leaving it in 4th even if it touches the limiter for the last 20-30ft. Not sure on your height but you may want to consider a Catalyst seat to get you lower on the bike which will allow a better tuck and aero dynamics. It'll also allow you to launch harder being lower and held against the tank. Good luck and be safe...

Here’s the link to the run. I was foot shifting, I ordered an rsr auto shift the day after the last track visit, it’s installed and I’ll be going back to the track on the 9th which is the next time it’s open. I’m 6’3”, I did have my elders make me some custom pegs since I’ve got the auto shifter now, should help with tuck quite a bit.

Wally Win

..You can hear first two shifts then when I caught teh other rider I rolled off then backon enough to beat him to teh stripe. Just barely cleaned the tire off as we had great traction that day. I was pretty sure I would break out if I did not back off since I caught him so early.. He and I were always very close at teh top of our runs..

I’m really looking forward to the auto shift and seeing how much it helps.

I'm told the RSR is a nice piece and can be programmed to a different shift rpm for each gear? The auto shift will be a true rpm, most likely your tach will read quite a bit higher. Do you have a plan for where you're going to set it? Remember that just because it can rev higher doesn't mean it's still making power. I'd suggest starting in the 10,400-10,800 maximum with the same choice for all gears. I'd suggest not making any other changes until you make at least 3 passes within 2-3 hundredths the raise or lower the shift rpm by 200 and see if it picks up or drops off then go the other direction 200 rpm. My turbo bike makes peak hp at 9,600, I've been recently shifting at 10,200 and was going to try 10,100 next time if/when our track opens again. Good luck and be safe.
P.S. my one and only daughters birthday is October 9th! Lucky day for me, hope for you too...

Thanks Chrly, I love the wheelie shot from 2017. The rear wheel is just passing the staging beams, clutch lever thrown and feet on the pegs. The 2019 shot shows more style once I had the color coordinated leathers made! Our track photographer Bruce Wheeler was and owner/operator of a Top Fuel dragster back in the 60's the "Wheeler Dealer" was always a top shelf car.

Chrly, that's cool how you can see the other rider in the mirror.

Ford tech, the 9th is mine and my wife’s anniversary and my grandmothers birthday as well. My wife is so badass she’s letting me go to the track and we’re celebrating on the 10th. I plan on starting at 10.5k and working up from there once it’s consistent like you said. I’m still working my 60’ down so this whole trip might be at one setting.

I was able to run, it didn’t go as good as I had hoped but it wasn’t terrible. First hit of the trailer I went a new personal best of 9.68@143, ended up going 9.62@143 on my fourth pass, several new personal bests, they are below, I’ll see if I can figure out how to post the slips

1.56 60’
6.22 1/8
116.85 mph 1/8
9.62 1/4
143.54 1/4 mph

Nice one. Stop at the 2 second mark and tap that space bar. He caught you sleeping. Had to be a close one at the line though.
