Good Cop
12/12/22 2:42 AM

This happened In New Zealand on News Years Day a few years ago, I was riding my GSXR1100W from Doyleston Canterbury NZ to The Bealey Pub in Arthers Pass. It was a Hot day clear sky (Summer in Soutern Hemisphere) 30 c I was riding up Porters Pass and got stuck behind 3 Camper Vans towing each other! (Very hard to pass) eventually got passed all 3 and continued towards Arthurs Pass, while minding my own business opposite to the turn off to the town Cass, I saw a Cop coming towards me (Yes I did shut the throttle) then gently opened it again. . . (I'm Not speeding) he put his lights on and brake lights to drop a U turn and stop me. Yes it did go through my mind but I'm not Guilty so lets stop and talk to him. He said he clocked me at 112 Km/hr (Speed Limit 100 Km/hr) I disagreed and gave him my License and began my discourse. I very politely asked him "If it wouldn't be too much trouble" may I see your Stalker Radar Logbook with the calibration date and The Two tuning Forks that are used for daily verification prior to use and may I check the serial number of the Radar stalker to see if it matches the Logbook along with the calibration of the two tuning forks along with todays date and Signature of the testing officer.
He said "Certainly You May", That wasn't the answer I expected! Yep everything was in order. He even gave me his Card with his contact details and he loaned me his pen to right down the Stalker Radar serial number. He was very cooperative, and we stood on the side of the road in the hot Sun as we discussed his training courses to use the Radar. I asked him if he would mind if I checked to see if his Patrol car was up to standard regarding Registration and Certificate of Fitness, all was OK. I also checked the Tyres and found Left Front tyre borderline for Minimum wear depth, he commented that is because in NZ we drive on the Left side of the road and he does lots of Right-Hand U turns. We had been talking for 30 minutes on the roadside and we shook hands and I congratulated him on being very Thorough and Conscientious in his Policing Duties.

He got back in his Patrol car, I put my Helmet back on and waited for him to drive off in the other direction and I hit the starter and continued on to the Bealey Pub in Arthers Pass.
I expected he would send me a Ticket in the mail with a Fine attached along with Demerit points for my License.
I arrived at the Bealey Pub and found it to be quite busy. I ordered a Coffee and a Muffin and found a seat to sit down. About 20 minutes later someone Tapped my Shoulder and when I looked around It was the Cop!
( I'm sure I saw him do a U turn and go towards Christchurch) He said to me I have got his Pen!
Yep his Pen? I used it to write down the serial numbers of the Radar for my court defense (If it came to that) and it was a Parker Pen (Quite Expensive) he understandably wanted it back. It may have been a gift?
By know the whole Pub has gone deathly quiet! Everyone is Looking at me while I go through my Jacket pocket looking for the Cops Pen. I could hear what everyone was thinking?
He's Done a Runner and the Cops have caught up with him! I bet he was riding some Big Bore Japanese Unguided Missile! He has been here 20 minutes I bet he was doing Warp 9 when the Cops clocked him! He's not a Harley rider he has the wrong Helmet for that.
The Cop is searching him for weapons (A Pen), Oh no Look He's going Quietly he knows he's guilty I said lets go to the car park and I will re enact where we were both standing when I handed his Pen back to him. I got him to open the passenger's door and stand behind the open door and I will stand in front and this is where we both stood when I gave him back his Pen. I looked in the Passenger's foot well and there was his Pen on the floor! There it is I said, He picked it up and was very apologetic, I said "No Worries". He got in his Patrol car and drove out. I smiled and waved! Since I Gulped my Coffee and Muffin on the way down the stairs I never went back inside the Pub. Of course, being a small town this would have set the Rumor Mill into overdrive that the Cops caught up with a bad Biker and as far as they know he was arrested and never seen again?
I guess for me the lesson was always be polite to the Police and always return something you have borrowed.
And by the way I never did receive a Ticket in the mail, and my License still has no demerit points.

Great story! ... and hits kinda close to home for me since I have good friends living in Oxford NZ, and when we visited them they drove us thru Arthur's Pass to Greymouth ... and return trip was on the scenic train. I always love riding trains

And, yeah, polite is always the best policy: In 38 years of driving and riding, I've received 6 speeding tickets, all deserved, but also 5 warnings ... maybe not all warnings deserved, but I'm pretty sure being very polite had a lot to do with it. And, I don't mean sugary syrupy polite, just regular guy polite; don't over-do it, but def be polite / respectful, and do a lot of listening rather than explaining and making excuses. By just listening with your full attention instead of talking, the officer does almost all the talking, and eventually some of them calm down, realize you're a regular person, and might even let you off.

Extrapolator, I have a Sister in Law who Lives in Oxford, Yes the Trans Alpine Express is a Train ride to remember.
The scenery is breathtaking and I got stopped by the Cop only about 2 miles from the train tracks where it passes through the small town of Cass on the way to Arthurs Pass.
I travel that way any time I get a chance and with some good weather. If you ever come back this way there are a couple of very good places to Rent a BMW or KTM adventure bike and do the crossing to Greymouth on a Bike as it stays close the Train tracks most of the way. The Scenery is just as good and on a good day the international visitors that do motorcycle tours in the South Island really do Rave about the Scenery. If your close to the speed limit the Cops won't bother you.
I haven't been stopped since that day and was up Arthurs pass two weeks back at the Bealey Pub, and no Cops!
I think your right on the money when you say be very Polite when the Police want to talk to you, as we must always respect the Office they represent. No matter what your personal views are or what Country your in.
You won't always Get Lucky but the interaction should not be unpleasant as they are average paid Public servants and they do have to put up with a lot of Shit and stay calm and professional.

On my way to Oregon on interstate 5 in Northern California .It is actually a fun ride even tho it is fourlanes,,well fun untill you get five or six vehicles slowing both lanes to 50 mph on the 90 mph turns then , side by side speeding up to 70 till the next turn a few hundred yds away then back down to 50..I was getting a bit frustrated so as we approached a turn preceding a very long climb , I figured I would squeeze between the two leaders after the turn and get far enough up the hill that they would no longer be a concern . As I approached the top of the hill I spotted a CHP sitting in the meridian.. Knowing I was running waay too fast , I slowed to 65 (speed limit) as I passed him. I watched and , sure enough, he pulled out behind me I hit the next area wide enough to stop and pulled over before he even had hit is lites Took off helmet and gloves ..He walked up and first words were , " You KNOW I could not just sit there after you passed a half dozen cars at that speed .."
He asked for my lic and registration, started back to his car and stopped. He looked at my exhaust , which was one I had made and had BLUNT FORCE very professionally marked on it . He looked at it, then my license again and said "Is that you"? I smiled and said yes . He said he would be right back , checked my papers and then told me that he was putting his buddies on notice and if I was tagged doing one mph over the limit before I hit the Oregon border (about 70 more miles) I would receive a very stiff ticket, all the while smiling ..

Yes it can be difficult to contain your smile when you've just realized you got Lucky?
And the most Sincere Apologies and Promises we all make in the "Heat of the Moment" can sometimes Evaporate much quicker than we thought!
Once the Adrenaline has worn off and the open road is in front of you it takes a very Disciplined rider to overcome the Temptation of "Opening the Taps too far"? Well at Least within the same Hour of being threatened with a very serious Ticket!
