Car oil filter vs motorcycle filter.
08/01/10 7:05 PM

I know alot of people are using car filters such as the mobile 1, the pure 1 and various others but do you feel the buy pass pressure and or flow rate could be an issue with these filters. I am thinking that that the one thing about the car filters is they come in a longer size that fits the zx14 The other issue is the wet clutch that pumps alot of crap in the engine oil when used hard. I have used the mobile 1 filter in the past because but I an shying away from it on my bike because the bypass pressure is too high and the filtering is too fine and when it loads up with clutch material the bearings could be starving for oil with too high of a by pass pressure. Just a thought!

I have used the Mobil 1 type and did think it changed the pressures of bypass pressure a bit-it seemed to me that way-i cant prove it-so I went with stock.

I shall be buying the scotts re-usable micronic filter-but then again I have means to use a untrasonic cleaner system at my work which will clear out foo the deposits of this type of filter.

I would tend to believe that any oil filter will do the job for me since I change filter and oil each 2k miles....

I'd say as long as the bypass is the correct pressure, or at least close, probably fine as long as overall it's a good filter.

Learning a few years ago that bypass occurs fairly frequently, probably a few times every time the engine runs almost makes me wonder the value of being overly concerned about filter performance.

Throw a couple high strength magnets on the can for good measure too.
