CLUTCH PROBLEMS
06/28/09 12:25 PM

HAS ANYONE EVER HAD SUCH CLUTCH PROBLEMS?
First off... my bike has over 13,500 miles and has been through three sets of new clutches, fibers and Brock's stiffer springs. I am a rookie that flipped my '06 zx14 at the starting line of the 1/4 mile. I was racing my friend that has an '06 mid 8 second ZX10. The fastest I have ever run was 9.65 - extended, lowered and power commander. I launched at 10,000 rpm as normal. But... soon realized that I forgot to strap the front down as she bounced straight up. I went to grab the clutch lever to bring her down and at that time my index finger slipped off causing my right hand to try and pull myself back on to the bike to get another grip. At that time my right hand, holding the throttle rolled back - I'm sure you know what's going to happen. To save myself from being body slammed by my "BIG GIRL" and having the windscreen break a few ribs or test the strength of my use-to-be rock solid abs - I pushed away clearing the destruction and landing on my "assets". My reason for telling you all of this is not to continue to embarrass myself but, to give any willing tech the gist of what all has happened to my "BIG GIRL".
Well... after fixing the few parts that got smashed, I got back on the road. After thirty miles or so I noticed that the clutch was still slipping when I would try to get into it. So even though the steels, fibers and springs were fairly new I took them out and noticed that they were not blue, burnt or worn. I still replaced all (2.6) steels, fibers and Brock's springs with new ones (SOAKED THE FIBERS IN 5W20 OIL OVER NIGHT). The only other thing that I have done was change the oil to Royal Purple 10w40 motorcycle oil. I put everything back together the next day and she still slipped. At that point I took the clutch apart and removed a few steels and fibers and "DOUBLE STEELED" her and put everything back. All then worked well and I put 400 plus miles before I had problems. At a traffic light I had the clutch pulled in but when I went to take off and let the clutch out she did not engage and go. I pulled the lever several times and finally she connected but it happened again a few miles down the road but would not connect. At that point I got a trailer for my queen and took her home. Any and all advice to help me fix this problem would very much be appreciated.

I am using this Royal Purple synthetic 10w40 motorcycle oil. Also... I believe if I would launch at 5k instead of 10 it would be better - need to practice. No, I have not seen your listing of the pack assembly and the clutch directions. But, on the ZX14 (there is this one ridge on the outside of the fibers that is marked with a particular color) I put the fibers into the basket where all the identifying different colors are visible in the basket slot. For the steels, I have all of them with the rounded side pointing towards the inside of the motor. Due to the fact that my clutch was slipping before I "DOUBLE STEELED" her, I was thinking that the pressure plate might be worn and needs to be replaced. After I get off work today, I'll pull the clutches. My friend with the Zx10 claims that he has done the "DOUBLE STEELED" several times and it has worked great. Although... if that is the case then I must have done something wrong. Do you know if this "DOUBLE STEELING" works - if so what is the trick.
