Best Slip-ons
02/13/15 9:00 AM

Being new to sport bikes, I'm not sure of the best exhaust options for my 2013 ZX-14R. I like the quiet stock and would like to keep it close to stock as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I prefer short as I can get. Thanks Eric.

Short will usually mean loud so you'll have to decide which you want. I like my Yosh 4:1 system but it's s bit louder than stock but not obnoxious.

If you want to get quieter set of slip-ons, I recommend Delkevic. With its Db killer, it is pretty quiet. You should avoid shorter slip-ons as Mad says it is louder. Yoshi slip-on with Db killer is quiet and nice looking but too expensive (for me anyway).

The brands I can find for the ZX-14 are as follows: 2 Brothers, Graves, Yoshimura, M4, Delkvic, Coffman, Brocks, Akrapovic, Scorpion, and LeoVince. Man thats alot of choices. Is it like a box of chocolate, you don't know what your going to get until you bolt em up?

Pretty much so. You will find some on Youtube but the sound on videos is different from the actual sound. For instance, I installed Muzzy - beautiful slip-on for sure - and it was fxxking loud. I ended up Delkevic because my objective was to reduce the weight without spending too much $$. If I had money, I would have bought Yoshimura. I am happy with Delkevic, though. Quality is excellent. Fit was perfect. Sound intoxicating yet quieter. At 70mph freeway speed, you don't hear the exhaust sound unless you rev it up. Muzzy at the same speed was ear-painful loud.

Which is the best exhaust equates to which is the best color. All of the exhausts you mentioned are good, which one do you like the looks of best and which one can you get for a decent price? Do you prefer all black, chrome, or carbon fiber? Lots of choices, hard decision!

I agree with OldMan, the Muzzy's is loud and may attract a lot of unwanted attention, but it is a good exhaust. Power difference between exhausts is only 1-2 HP so unless you are after max HP I wouldn't use that as a criteria for what to buy.

I would just keep it stock then. Once you drop it and damage the pipes, you can buy exhaust. If you never drop it, it's a win- win.

My 2 cents worth.

Yoshimura R-77's.

I think they really suit the ZX-14 looks wise.
And the sound is a nice balance of volume and low growl IMO.
They also come with baffles so if you feel the volume is a bit much (which would be surprising), you can quiet them down.
I have titaniums with carbon ends and baffles out.
You can also get chrome and full carbons.

But then it's really up to the individual as the look and sound of after market pipes vary so much and what looks and sounds great to some doesn't to others.

The only standard is the vast majority don't like the stock cans, Gen 1 or 2.

Good luck and post pics on what you decide on...

Ha ha.
Wanna hear something funny?
I actually don't any have chicken strips on my rear tyre and when I posted that pic taken quite a while ago I thought to myself
"Now where did that come from but it's okay, no one will notice".
Of course I didn't take into account the super keen eye of the Rookster...

I find it a bit strange that on my 06 and 08 ZX14s, there was never any chicken strip to be seen, but my '12 still has some showing.
Maybe it's the M5s, maybe I'm not comfy on it yet. Just kinda weird.

They say we should not be concerned about having chicken strips and they are probably right.
However for some, theory is completely different from reality!

In my early days of riding, I hated chicken strips.
But after improving my riding, I haven't had chicken strips on the rear for quite a long time now.
And that's good.

Problem is now I hate that I can't get rid of the small chicken strips on the front!
And that's not so good.

But I'm working on it...

When I bought my bike I did extensive research. If I can find the link I will post it. The lnk is to an incredible site that actually tested every available slip on exhaust with dyno results. Whether it was bullshit or not I dont know. However the info was consistent with alot forum and product data I read through. I finally settled on the M4 dual retro slip ons. I left the baffles in and they are pretty quiet below 5000 rpm or so. So on start up and heading out of a subdivision or neighborhood the sound is controllable and respectful. The sweet part is when you get on it the sound is awesome. Also the termination is extended back from the heels and legs but small enough to not over power the rear of the bike. The finish is awesome and at 600.00 not having to map but yet still maintain power throught the low end through upper end is awesome. The M4 is the best way to go unless you want to spend over a grand on Brocks slip ons.

For me, Delkevic has the best ROI.

Yannih, I love the pics of your bike with the Yoshi R77 slip-ons. They look great! I'm glad that I chose to go with the Yoshi R77 slip-ons for my ZX-14. They look great and I've been extremely impressed with how well they sound on Youtube. I'm looking forward to finding out how nice they sound in person once mine is installed.

Psycho, I reckon you'll be really happy with your choice.
I just bought this Gen 2 with R77 carbons.
They look heaps better than the pic shows.
IMO, these are the best looking pipes you can buy, but I know it's very subjective and many would disagree.

Do you need to purchase the fuel controller, when you install the m4's, or is there a cheaper way to adjust fuel management?

What I have always been told is that you do not need to adjust fueling for slipons. The performance enhancement will be optimized if you have a PCV with the right map. However, the stock header with slipons is still restricted enough to run on stock fueling. I would consider running whatever slipons you use without a fuel module if you want to save the $$. That was the case with the Gen1 and I imagine the Gen 2 is the same in that regard. I have heard of people running full systems on stock fueling and no problems. I wouldn't run a full system without a PCV because I would hate to have some point of the powerband be lean like maybe where the flies are closed. Why chance it?

M4s are pretty loud. I like loud. They are very lightweight and they look good IMO. A full system will be even lighter + you have an appreciable power gain.
