My own noises
07/13/11 5:51 AM

So I see everyone asking about their vibrations and noises so I figured I'd join the party and ask about my own.
I have a whirring sound coming off the front end under the triple trees for all I can tell that seems to change tone and frequency as I speed up and slow. It is not related to the engine as there is no change when I pull in the clutch. It doesn't do it all the time. It happened before and after I changed my brake pads and lines/fluid. It does not oscillate which would otherwise suggest a warped rotor to me. It's just a low whir which picks up in tone and loudness the faster the front wheel is moving.
I'm thinking it is either normal or something going on with the wheel bearings. I've had the front wheel off several times and checked it and relubed but noticed no damage or change in condition. It just seems to want to do this when it feels like it. And I can feel a slight harmonic from it in the bars sometimes. Just in case it makes a difference to anyone; when I take my hands off the bars and the engine is braking (in gear) I get head shake. Not crazy tank-slappin-fun headshake, but a progressive wobble that's very visible in the bars rotating them maybe an inch or two at the end of the grips. Not certain yet but when I have my Coocase topcase mounted this seems to be more prevalent.

Any thoughts??

yeah, I think it is nothing, maybe pads grazing the rotors... just kinda unnerving at times. Maybe if I get a chance I will make a recording of the sound...

Hmmmm...the only whirring/whistling/whining sound mine gets is at a certain rpm and a certain air temp.Usually coming off of a fast(er) rpm range.Coming into a mild cruise mode, she'll whistle and whine ...sounds like a turbo...kinda.It'll do that and stay that way until I increase throttle again.Kinda cool actually.I always think..."she's happy"....everything feels and seems "just right".

Just changed my pads and lines. Noticed a couple times about 2 seconds of whine after cutting throttle. No way I would hear it with throttle open even a crack. Seemed to happen only during a small range of rpm like about 4000-3500. I was not able to make the sound come back every time. I tried a few times.

I thought it might be the front sprocket tha everyone says will whine on decel if you do not have the rubber damper. Mine is a 17 T and no damper but I do not thionk that was it. Sprocket's been on for 1500 miles and I never noticed a whine.

Maybe it's the brake pads (which are perfectly silent otherwise-even at parking lot speed). Maybe the noise was always there. I am not concerned at all. Just thought I 'd chime in since I saw something familiar.

The only "other" noise I have gotten(not for a long time though)has been the front fender kinda "rumbling" on certain road surfaces.Guess it acts like a "megaphone" somehow transmitting the tire noise to the fender and up.

I think my front fender makes a hollow, plasticy sounding clunk if I hit a hard bump. Does not happen too often. Prolly just flexion of the plastic snapping back.

She's bottoming Rook!Mine did that as well...till I firmed up the preload a bit.

Yep, I increased preload and damping and the clunk went away and never came back.

Perhaps. I think it is a different sound than the bottoming I used to hear hitting a bump at low speed. It is softer and loger like a brief vibration where the low speed bottom was just a n abrupt CLUNK. I almost never hear it. Maybe the the forks could be tightened up some more though. Personally, I don't think the stock suspension is good enough to weather any bump at any speed. especially the front. A really nice aftermarket suspension might never bottom even if you flew off a small jump.

Hey Rook...have you checked your fender bolt attachments where the long vertical arm connects to the fender?Any cracks in there on either side?If those get tightened too much, they will cause a crack(s) to develope.

I just had the fender off. No cracks. Those two dark grey hex head bolts, I usually locktight them because they come loose easy. I have lost a couple from vibration.
