Swingarm and launch boost
12/15/20 6:58 PM

Took my bike to the track and could not keep the front-end down with my 6 inch over swingarm. I'm going to double that to 12 inches. Any recommendations for a good but relatively cheap 12" over swingarm? Also, with a 12 inch over swingarm, do you think I could launch it at 9 psi? And one more question, do you guys have progressive turbo controllers on your bikes or do you boost by gear or by a button touch?

Thanks

Aloha skewed, Sorry it's taken me so long to chime in but I've been giving your questions a lot of thought... The short answer is NO! First the swingarm, I've been using a McIntosh +12 aluminum arm virtually all the way back of the 6" optional adjustment slot. That gives me 69.5-70" wb depending what gearing I'm using. With the HP you're making that's not a place to try to save a few bucks, you should likely consider underbracing also. To try to launch at 9 psi in my opinion is suicidal! I'd been launching of a 2 step around 5-6k never holding it on the 2 step until the tree activated and I'd go from 2 psi to 7.3 ish in .7 seconds inevitably going into a wheelie and having to chop the throttle every pass. That's with the base 4 psi spring in the gate which allowed it to make 7.5 to 7.8 psi at times. I'm using an NLR AMS 1000 and was just starting to get a grip on it our first event this past February when we then got shut down for Covid. The controller can add over mechanical boost but can't reduce mechanical boost. I can get really deep here and will be happy to if you want to spend the time? I don't remember and would need to know your clutch, gearing, launch and shift rpm target or I can just tell you what's worked for me. I'll add a few pics just to start.

Thanks FordTech58,
I actually did launch the bike at 9 psi at the track, but held back on the 60'. It was a 1.6 but then I pinned the throttle in second and she stood straight up and had to cut the throttle and stayed in second at a higher RPM and she came straight up again and had to cut the throttle once more. I then shifted into third and pinned the throttle again and the tire basically floated to the finish. I had a horrible ET 9.25 BUT the trap speed was 165 mph so she was pulling like a rocket at the end. I did not try to launch it at 9psi again. My other runs were in low boost 4psi and I was in the 1.4's for my 60'.

Overall, I was very disappointed.but realized with stock gearing and with only a 6 inch over swingarm, that was just not enough. I ordered a Chromoly 12" over with under-bracing and a 44 tooth rear sprocket. I'm going to take it back to Johnny Turbo and have him add a progressive controller and maybe up the boost to 12psi at the very end of the track.

FordTech58,
Why can't I send a private message to you. Have you blocked this from your settings?

Thanks

I don't knowingly have anything blocked? My email is rickbustamaui@gmail.com if you'd like to send it that way. Just put something about ZX14R in the title, Aloha...

Thanks FordTech58,
Your name is not in the drop-down box of users who I can choose from to send a private message (maybe the moderator could add it?). I sent you an email though.

Thanks again!

ZMBKLR, I had the Roaring Toyz bolt on extensions and I still have them and the drag race chain and stock rear sprocket. They're on Facebook's market place for sale $250 for everything.

Ok thanks. I’ve thought about extensions but think I’ll wait and put that money towards an arm.
