So how messy is it to change the air filter?

I was rummaging through my service manual (damn those things are expensive) and couldn't figure it out..

it looks like it involves pulling half the plastic fairing pieces of the thing.

true? false?

Inquiring minds NEED to know before my BMC gets here...

The only things you need to pull off are the formans and the tank cover. The tank cover may vex you a bit the first time but it is really not hard to reattach once you understand how the projections work. -- after removing the screws that hold the tank cover down, pull the projection on each side. Then spread the sides and slide/push the cover toward the front to unhook the tabs inside the top.

zx14 ive never used the bmc. but i installed a k&n(twice lol) i put it in the first time put bike all back together then found a tube of grease still in the box with the instructions saying you must put a bead of grease around the outside edge of the filter to keep dirt from getting around it. so i had to tear it apart AGAIN, wasnt so easy to get the filter out this time without the grease on it. good luck really not that bad of a job....if you do it right the first time that is lol

well, all the parts and pieces are in..

PC USBIII, BMC filter, and the Yosh TRC slip ons (Carbon Fibre).

odd notes:

a) the tank cover is )(*)(*)#@$ing tough to get off. I'll probably forget how to do it when I have to clean the filter.. which leads me to:

b) while I was looking at the BMC race filter I installed (not the standard BMC filter) I happened to hold it up to the light, and good God! You can almost see through it!! I held the stock filter (1400 miles) up to the light and was amazed at the difference in porosity.
Are these things safe on the road? I'd sure hate to have to rebuild the front end due to an unplanned ingestion of gravel..

c) speaking of gravel when I pulled all the fairings off the left side to put the PC in I was amazed all the gravel that collects here and there under the fairing. I'd swear there's a pound or so of sand hidden here and there.

d) Percy is now an ICBM... midrange is stronger, it revs faster, and top end.. well, let's just say I'm glad there were no cops on Colorado 83 today. had some guy on a KTM 990 dogging my tail. when last seen he was struggling to stay in view of my mirrors. heheh..

You'll see. It's not bad at all once you have done it a couple times. I agree, spreading the sides of the cover is a little scary the first time. Once you remember where the projections go in it's a piece of cake. Just remember there are those hooks on top inside the cover so you must slide it forward a half inch before it will lift off.

b) while I was looking at the BMC race filter I installed (not the standard BMC filter) I happened to hold it up to the light, and good God! You can almost see through it!! I held the stock filter (1400 miles) up to the light and was amazed at the difference in porosity.

Once again, I'm with you. I have never heard of anyone blaming any problems on the use of a race filter but I don't trust them. I have the BMC race filter also but I've decided to save it for riding where I feel the dust is at a minimum which means in the country or at the track. I plan to hang on to my stock filter and run it most of the time.

I get that too. Just gravel, no sand to speak of.

Good job getting that PC in. If you were able to get those plugs separated without much trouble, I think you should be able to handle almost anything you might want to do with your 14.
