Oil Receiver Question
09/07/22 3:45 PM

Hey all, I just had something strange happen with my bike. 2022 with 2k miles, and the oil receiver bottle was full. Like about three or four bottles worth came out when I pulled it off the bike. I had my 2015 for over 4k miles and don't ever remember the bottle ever filling up. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but maybe the dealer overfilled it on the 600 mile service? Does anyone have an idea of how often its supposed to be drained? The owners manual doesn't list time or mileage intervals.

Thanks.

I think that drain is more for water/oil whatever gets into the airbox and you can be a good little greeenie and drain it into your oil recycle bin instead of letting it drip onto the street where it will kill small children

If its full of oil they did overfill - why would you ever let the min wage knuckle draggers at the stealership ever touch your bike? and for an oil change at that ....

Fair question, my laziness and lack of time in the day were the main factors in taking it to the dealership. I knew better. I just didn’t know if oil hitting that bottle was normal with a correct amount of oil in the crankcase, during high speed operation/cornering type riding since I had never seen it before.

Have someone hold the bike upright, then check the oil level window. Should show it overfilled. Best time to check is a cold engine with all the oil from the top end settled overnight and that tells you all the oil in the window.

Check the oil level as mentioned above. Drain as much out as necessary to fill to the top line. Your airbox is coated with oil but no harm, it will dry up in a year or two. Your air filter is saturated with oil now too. Not too big of a deal either IMO but put a fresh one ASAP. This was a definite signal to never bring your bike back to that shop. I'd tell them and I'd tell them I'm never going back there as well. Don't blaim the poor tech, he probably had 25 other oil changes to do that day.

Thanks Rook, I did check the oil and it's definitely drained itself back down to the full line. I was hoping the air filter was far enough forward to stay out of the way of any oil, but I'll be sure to check it. Any (easy) way to check the inside of the air box and maybe wipe out any residual oil that might be left behind?

If you check your filter and find oil on it, there's definitely some in the airbox too. The only way to inspect inside the air box on the Gen2 is to remove the gas tank and remove the air box covers. I wouldn't bother for this. The oil will drain down out of the air box drain tube. If there's any oil in the air box it will completely dry out within 6 months. If you wipe it out, fibers from the rag will catch on the rough cast interior of the air box. That's probably not a big problem either but I'd just leave it. Wiping won't do anything a little time won't do without the hassle of tearing the bike apart. The oil can't go down your intake, it would take a deep puddle in there to seep over the edges of the intake ducts. Any oil would be draining toward the back of the air box and going down drain tube. Six months from now, you won't have so much as a film of oil in there, it all dries up eventuall and there's no dust getting in there to collect in the oil so no problem.

Mr Rook I think I got this air box problem figured out. Pull the box out then literally sand the inside to a polish finish then do a ceramic coat so nothing sticks to it. The air will flow faster and oil will drain out of it quicker and iffens the same was done to the air inlet tubes it could be a HP increase due to fast air flow. Might need a filter in the tube from the valve cover to the air box so that the oil will not enter the air box as gritty so not to make up a crud build up inside the box and oil will drain out of the air box without restrictions. Now after all that we have to figure out what motor oil will be best for the air box for quickest drain to the catch bottle.

I know I have not over thinked it yet as my mind is still working on it and I am sure after I roll another 1 that the rest of the fix is going to come to me !!!!!

Interesting tidbit from last night. A friend came over with a 05 ZX6R. I noticed her oil bottle was full, drained about 4 ounces out of her air box. Pulled another 2-ish quarts out of the crankcase to get it down to the full mark.

She complained it was smoking periodically. Can’t believe it was even running with that much oil in it.

Many of my best decisions were the result of overthinking. Actually, there are improved flow air tubes for the Hayabusa but I've heard they probably don't make much improvement. If you want to improve your airflow, get a turbo.
