TROUBLE GETTING HEADERS TO FIT SNUG AGAINST MOTOR!
05/02/09 6:31 AM

alright hub, i've already got some feedback from another member about how to get those headers snug. i turned the bike on after installing the m10 and i've got exhaust coming out the top of the headers! now i've got to take the damn radiator off again! curse words here. anyway, maybe somebody's got some useful tips on how to properly align and fit aftermarket headers. those stockers seemed to fit perfect. these, not so much

alright, i just dloaded the m10 map and i noticed that i'm only leaking exhaust out of the far right header (when seated). i tightened the nut some more and it's still leaking a little. is this a serious issue? i'm so tired of dealing with those headers! i'm ready to put the plastics back on and ride already!

I am just wondering, did you remove the old header gaskets that came with the stockers?

nope! didn't know i was supposed to until i put the headers on and one wouldn't seal! 3 of 4 sealed but not the far right. well, at least i've got new antifreeze in the radiator and overflow reservoir.

thanks for the info hub! i thought it would be best to tighten all eight nuts a little at a time so that the headers and flanges don't get crooked on me.

I'm just wondering why the yosh system shows no header gaskets required. This can't be right, or can it ?

Hold on here don't just tighten the nuts they need to be torqued to no more than 25 ft/lbs if they are you run the risk of breaking the head bolts and that you don't want to do. When ever you remove the header you want to put new gaskets in they cost $8 bucks here in Canada. When your placing the gaskets in the head use some grease to hold the gaskets in place "doesn't matter what type of grease or how much it will burn away" when your inserting the header. Torque the head bolts to 22 ft/lbs and ride the bike for awhile and then retorque to 25 ft/lbs and you shouldn't have any leaks but always put in new gaskets and don't just buy 4 buy 8 or 12 just in case it's worth it.

good advice here boofa next time i will definitely order more than just one set. i torqued the nuts down after installing the new gaskets and forgot that the can needed to go on first. i had to reloosen the nuts and put the exhaust can on. the gaskets weren't fresh then! i haven't noticed any leaks though. you think i should order new ones anyway? i sure would hate to go through all that again!

I would spend the time and do it right, it's more satisfaction when you know it's done right and you don't have that doubt in the back of your head.

When I noticed my mistake (in to much of a hurry) I had not started the bike. Loosened the bolts made the repair then retorqued . I have NO leaks. I had extra gaskets but did not install. Maybe lazy but if it does not leak ? If it ever starts to leak I will change. This was last year and still going strong.

If you didn't run it your will be fine because the grease will hold the gaskets in place if you used grease but you should still be ok if you only loosened them.
